Reach
Number of users affected per period — typically per quarter. Use real analytics numbers when possible.
Impact
How much each user benefits, on a fixed scale: 3 = massive, 2 = high, 1 = medium, 0.5 = low, 0.25 = minimal.
Confidence
A 0–100% multiplier that discounts ideas backed by guesses. Use lower confidence when your estimates are not data-backed.
Effort
Total work required, in person-months. Includes product, design, and engineering time across the whole team.

What is the RICE scoring formula?
RICE = (Reach × Impact × Confidence) / Effort. Reach is how many users are affected per period (e.g., per quarter). Impact is a multiplier from 0.25 (minimal) to 3 (massive). Confidence is a percentage from 0–100%. Effort is the work required, usually in person-months.
How do I pick a Reach number?
Pick a consistent time window — most teams use a quarter — and estimate how many of your existing or potential users will encounter the change. Use real numbers from your analytics tool when you can rather than guessing.
What does the Impact score mean?
Impact captures how much each affected user will benefit. The standard scale is: 3 = massive impact, 2 = high, 1 = medium, 0.5 = low, 0.25 = minimal. Be conservative — most ideas land at 1 or below.
Why does Confidence matter?
Confidence is what keeps RICE honest. If you are not sure your reach or impact estimates are right, lower the confidence percentage. This naturally penalizes ideas backed by weak evidence and rewards ideas backed by data or user research.
How is Effort measured?
Effort is usually expressed in person-months — the total amount of work the idea requires across product, design, and engineering. For a quick estimate, count days or weeks instead and stay consistent across all your ideas.
