What is Scrum?

Scrum is an Agile framework for managing complex projects through iterative progress in fixed-length cycles called sprints. It emphasizes cross-functional collaboration and the delivery of functional product increments to allow for frequent feedback and adjustment.

When to use it

Use Scrum when requirements are likely to change and you need a structured way to deliver value at a regular cadence. It is ideal for teams that want to improve transparency, predictability, and the ability to pivot based on real-world stakeholder feedback.

Example

A SaaS team building a mobile app uses three-week sprints to manage their development cycle. In one sprint, they commit to three user stories: implementing biometrics, fixing five high-priority UI bugs, and adding a dark mode toggle. By the end of the sprint, these features are fully tested and ready for release, allowing the team to gather user feedback immediately rather than waiting for a six-month launch cycle.

How Planet Roadmap helps with Scrum

Planet Roadmap features a dedicated Sprint view that allows teams to organize tasks into time-boxed iterations, track progress with automated burndown charts, and link sprint tasks directly to high-level OKR goals.

FAQ

How is Scrum different from Kanban?
Scrum relies on fixed-length iterations called sprints and specific roles like the Scrum Master, while Kanban is a continuous flow system focused on limiting work-in-progress without mandated time-boxes.
What is the primary role of a Scrum Master?
A Scrum Master acts as a facilitator for the team, responsible for removing blockers, ensuring the team adheres to Scrum principles, and protecting them from outside interference during a sprint.
