What is Critical Path?

A Critical Path is the sequence of project tasks that determine the shortest possible duration to complete a project. Any delay in a task on this path directly impacts the project’s final completion date, whereas tasks not on the path have 'float' and can be delayed without pushing back the deadline.

When to use it

Teams should identify the critical path during the planning phase of complex projects with multiple dependencies. It helps project managers prioritize resources, identify potential bottlenecks, and determine which tasks require the strictest oversight to avoid shipping delays. It is particularly useful for major product launches or infrastructure migrations where timelines are rigid.

Example

A SaaS team is launching a new mobile app in 12 weeks. While marketing can design assets (2 weeks) and support can write docs (3 weeks) simultaneously, the core development path—database setup (2 weeks), API development (4 weeks), and UI integration (4 weeks)—takes 10 weeks total. If the API development slips by one week, the entire 12-week launch schedule is pushed back because those tasks are on the critical path. Conversely, if the documentation takes 4 weeks instead of 3, the launch date remains unaffected because it has 'slack' relative to the development timeline.

What should I do if my critical path is too long to meet a deadline?
You can perform 'crashing' by adding more resources to critical tasks or 'fast-tracking' by performing tasks in parallel that were originally scheduled in sequence. Both methods can shorten the timeline but often increase project risk or cost.
Can the critical path change during the middle of a project?
Yes. If a non-critical task is delayed so significantly that it consumes all its 'float' time, it can become part of a new critical path. Continuous monitoring ensures you are always focused on the sequence that currently determines your delivery date.
